ABOUT CALEDONIA
Our Story
Liz fell in love with flat-coats when she got her first dog, Maccabee, back in 1997. He was a superb companion dog - beautiful, gentle, great with kids and other dogs, friendly, calm, super easy to train. When Tim and Liz met and married, Tim became just as attached to Maccabee and flat-coats in general. Maccabee's death at just under 10 years old was very hard on all the family. Since then we've mostly had more than one flat-coat at a time, and have increasingly been working towards being able to breed our own dogs from those we have loved sharing life with. Our dogs are family companions, with a lot of scope and ability to work whether it be in the field or an agility ring. We also show our dogs to confirm sure their conformation is as it should be for a long day retrieving for a hunt - or just a long hike. Each dog has their own personality and particular gifts and quirks - but they are all also full of classic flatcoat qualities: attentive, fun, responsive, happy, confident and loving.

Though we are based in Rhode Island, USA, our "Caledonia" name is a tribute to our favorite place, Scotland, which is also a favorite place of our dogs. Most of them have come with us on extended trips to the Highlands, where the weather and terrain suit flat-coats down to a T. (The photo above shows Blue, and Rannoch behind him, enjoying Dunalastair Loch in the Highlands.) Whether it's swimming in a loch or climbing a crag, lying by the fire or hanging out in a pub with other dogs and people, it's a beloved place to us and the dogs. We hope our name will help us keep the generous, outdoorsy, active spirit of Scotland with us and our dogs for many years to come.
